WILEY FROM ATLANTA BLOOD ORANGE

Atlanta is synonymous with hip-hop, and so it’s no wonder that ‘Blood Orange’ from the pointedly named Wiley From Atlanta has hip-hop feels in spades. It’s the heavy backbeat and synth whines that give us that old school flavour, although Wiley isn’t trying to repeat what’s already been done. Inspired by the likes of Andre 3000, King Krule and Mac DeMarco, Wiley finds his groove in the cross section between lo-fi songwriting, alt-jazz and big beats. Fronting this melting pot is the artist’s gruff vocal, which sounds intoxicated with the pain of nostalgia as he looks back on a closed relationship that he hasn’t yet checked out of. As Wiley himself explains: “Blood Orange is a song about relationships. It's about loving someone even after they've already left you. I think it is also about trying to let someone go, and not really knowing how to.” The video too portrays this unhappiness in solitude and the temptations that come along with it. - Hannah Thacker
